Our Hens

The flock at Laughing Hen consists of the following:

  • Araucana Americanas, otherwise known as "Easter Egg Chickens" because they lay eggs varying in color from turquoise to olive to brown. These hens have both Chilean and American roots.

  • Rhode Island Reds who are full-blooded American chickens and produce the most beautiful brown eggs in the world.

  • Black Australorps who, originally from Australia, lay light brown eggs in abundance.

  • White Leghorns who lay big, gorgeous white eggs.

Our ladies live lives of luxury. They are fed all-natural food and allowed to roam during the day.

When their egg-laying years come to end, they don't face the chopping block but are sent to the back pasture -- the Old Hen Home -- where they live out the rest of their lives.

(This is only because the seven-year-old who helps take care of them says she won't go to college if we eat them.

If any shareholder wants to adopt a fat, old chicken, please email us immediately).

Our first batch of spring chicks just arrived...

...we train them early to lay eggs.

Unfortunately, no amount of etiquette training keeps them from falling asleep at the dinner table.

A pair of hawks are nesting in a tree just inside the perimeter of the chicken yard.

This is our first attempt at a scarecrow.

Advice welcome...

The newest arrivals...

...in the Thanksgiving mashed potato dish.

This is what happens to the bathroom when the chicks are ordered too early in the year.

(And it's too cold to put them outside.)

Outside. Finally.
